Taler & Dollar

The Burg Hasegg was built after the city was founded in 1303 to protect the town, the salt production and the salt mining, the wharf and the shipping on the Inn and to guard the old salt route.  Siegmund the Rich and Emperor Maximilian, expanded the Burg Hasegg into a representative castle.

The Hall Mint Museum is located in Hasegg Castle, which was first mentioned in documents in the 13th century. When silver mining began in Schwaz, it was not long before Archduke Sigismund moved the mint from Meran to Hall in 1477. Just about 100 years later, the first mechanical coinage was realized. These impressive minting machines can be admired in the museum today.

The famous Maria Theresa Taler was minted over 17 million times around 1750 and used as a means of payment all over the world. The Hall Mint is therefore the birthplace of theTaler and the Dollar.

The museum is also interesting for children! “Franz” tells the secrets of the mint masters and coin counterfeiters with the audio guide. The mint tower, the town's landmark, also offers a fantastic view over the medieval town of Hall as far as Innsbruck and the imposing mountains. Falcons, city archaeology and the largest silver coin in the world accompany you to the highlight: the manual minting of a coin just like in the old days....
